MACRA rubbishes ‘spy machine’ claims
GOVERNMENT
By BiztechAfrica - Nov. 8, 2011, 10:31 a.m.The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA), has rejected rumours that its planned Consolidated ICT Regulatory Management System (CIRMS) is a ‘spy machine’ that can eavesdrop on phone conversations.
MACRA says the system is intended to counter certain telecoms fraud and track telecoms revenue, and is not capable of listening in on conversations. The system is reported to be capable of logging factors such as phone calls, numbers called and call duration, in order to ensure telecoms revenue collection.
However, rumours persist that that CIRMS is intended for surveillance. Earlier this year, MACRA announced that it was putting the CIRMS project on hold.
