Harare halts fibre trenching

The Harare City Council has suspended all fibre optic trenching activities in the city by ICT service providers in the capital, due to the violation of by-laws.
The council is up in arms with telecommunications service providers who are digging trenches in the CBD but failing to repair the dug-up areas or return the city’s infrastructure to its original state.
Town Clerk Tendai Mahachi, who under Zimbabwe’s urban council governance system, acts as a CEO, said the city had entered into agreements with the service providers to rehabilitate roads after the installation of the fibre optic cables.
He said many were reneging on their promises, forcing the city to take tough action.
The city also alleged that some companies failed to engage the council's relevant departments before digging the trenches.
The trench digging is part of a project to link cities in the country through underground optic fibre.
