Gorillas get online help
GOVERNMENT
By BiztechAfrica - Jan. 15, 2012, 5:39 p.m.Uganda’s Wildlife Authority (UWA) is raising awareness and funding for its gorilla conservation programme through online campaigns, social media and virtual tracking.
UWA’s website, friendagorilla.org, delivers information and updates about the dwindling gorilla population in the country’s reserves. With only about 720 mountain gorillas left in the world, Uganda has a little over half the world’s population of this highly endangered species. Rwanda, and DRC are home to the rest.
Uganda has stepped up its efforts to save the animals, using the site and a facebook profile to grow public awareness, seek donations and track its gorillas. The site will also soon feature an online shop and online real-time tracking of gorillas.
Once supporters friend a rare Ugandan gorilla, the UWA will update them on the gorillas’ status through Facebook and Twitter. Strategically placed cameras in the Bwindi National Forest will also stream video footage of gorillas to audiences worldwide.
