Ghana: reprieve for unregistered SIMs
GOVERNMENT
By BiztechAfrica - March 2, 2012, 9:30 a.m.Ghana’s Communications Minister may have allowed a reprieve for around 3.2 million phone subscribers in the national SIM registration exercise.
Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to engage telecoms companies before it terminates all unregistered SIM cards tomorrow. The deadline for SIM registration is 3 March, after which subscribers were warned that unregistered SIMs could be deactivated without further notice.
However, many subscribers report that their SIMs are listed as unregistered, even though they took steps to register them.
Minister Iddrisu says the government does not intend to deny Ghanaians their right to access communication. He said the regulator could reach an understanding with telcos on the management of those who tried to register or who have registered but are still awaiting validation.
The NCA says the Minister’s directive is in line with NCA goals to ensure that the termination is done ‘with a human face’.
