Ghana NCA disputes Tigo numbers
GOVERNMENT
By BiztechAfrica - April 2, 2012, 1:16 p.m.Ghana’s National Comunications Authority has confronted Millicom Ghana Limited, operators of Tigo network, over the subscriber numbers it published last week.
Tigo stated that it was the second-biggest operator in Ghana by subscriber numbers. However, NCA statistics place Vodafone Ghana second.
The NCA said it was the only authority mandated to report on the telecoms industry in the country.
In its initial report, Vodafone finished the year as second leading operator with 4.2 million subscribers, representing 20.2 percent market share while Tigo came third with 3.9 million subscribers, representing 18.53% of the market share.
According to Tigo’s annual report, it ended 2011 with 21.3% of the market share, based on lower penetration figures than those stated by the NCA.
The difference in total national subscriber numbers appears to be due to different parameters used – whether subscribers were active within the past 60 days or the past 90.
