Ghana launches girls in ICT programme

Ghana has launched a new nationwide “Girls in ICT” programme to help close the gender gap in the ICT sector.
Communication Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the programme had been born of the ITU Girls in ICT celebration in April, when local participants had felt there was a need for a sustained effort to encourage more girls to enter the ICT sector.
The programme will include government sponsorships of more girls studying ICT-related subjects, curriculum enhancement, competitions and mentorship.
Ms Dorothy Gordon, Director of Kofi Annan ICT Centre of Excellence, announced sponsorships for five ICT degree-holders to undergo six months of ICT training at the centre, as part of the new programme.
