Former telecom boss nominated as Minister designate for Communications Ministry

Former Acting Managing Director of defunct Western Telesystems Ghana Limited (Westel), Ursula Owusu- Ekuful has been nominated as Minister designate for the Communication Ministry by Ghana’s new elected President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, a statement issued and signed by the Press Secretary to the President-Elect, Eugene Arhin has confirmed.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful who is the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West Constituency in the Greater Accra Region and also serves on the Appointments, Communications and Subsidiary Legislation Committees of Parliament is expected to bring on board her rich experience in telecom to bear in the country’s most vibrant and versatile communications industry.
The once Communications Director of Corporate and External Affairs of ZAIN for about a year, and Legal and Governance Consultant Managing Consultant have a Degree in Law from the University of Ghana.
The legislature if approved by parliament would be dealing with sensitive issues including the implementation of new policies in the 4G space. Currently the new government transition team has asked the regulator to put on hold all matters relating 4G policies.
Industry observers would also be watching with keen interest on how the incoming minister designate handles other related issues with regards to the sale of the second slot of the 800MHz 4G spectrum that was left after MTN bought one for a whopping US$67.5million and also the Interconnect Clearinghouse (ICH), as some NPP MPs now in government were in vehemently opposed to the ICH while in opposition.
