Egypt subscribers get number changes
TELECOMS
By BiztechAfrica - Oct. 18, 2011, 10:32 a.m.On the instructions of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority, Egypt's 76 million mobile phone users now have 11-digit numbers instead of 10-digit numbers.
The old numbers will continue to work for the next four months.
Egypt's three mobile operators - Mobinil, Etisalat and Vodafone - launched concerted media campaigns to alert customers and suggest ways to revise their contacts.
Smartphone users will be able to download a free application from their network that will automatically update the numbers in their phone address book.
However, users of less advanced phones can visit network stores where staff will help them to manually change numbers.
While all mobile numbers previously started with 01, Vodafone numbers will now start with 010, Etisalat numbers with 011 and Mobinil with 012.
