Cote d’Ivoire launches broadband project

By BiztechAfrica - July 24, 2012, 2:02 p.m.Cote d’Ivoire Prime Minister Jeannot Kouadio Ahoussou has officially launched construction of the country's broadband backbone ina ceremony at San Pedro.
The Prime Minister said the first phase of the initiative would comprise 1,400km of fibre optic infrastructure. It will be the first link in a network spanning 6,000km of optical fibre, connecting all the prefectures and sub-prefectures in the country, he said.
Ahoussou acknowledged the involvement of China and ICT giant Huawei in the project, saying without their contribution, it would not have been possible.
He said: “The President of the Republic, HE Mr. Alassane Ouattara, intends to make the Ivory Coast, an emerging country by 2020. To achieve this fully, Cote d'Ivoire must have critical infrastructure, including the infrastructure for connectivity with the rest of the world, but also on our entire territory.”
