Burundi’s U-COM gets expansion loan
BURUNDI| Nov. 17, 2011, 10:36 a.m.
U-COM Burundi has secured a USD25 million World Bank loan for network expansion.
UCOM, formerly Telecel-Burundi, operates with the brand name Leo. It is owned by Orascom Telecom of Egypt through its Telecel Globe holding company.
It will use the loan to expand its network coverage in the country, rolling out into rural and remote areas of Burundi where mobile phone service is not available.
U-Com Burundi manager Raymond Laforce said the financing would allow the company to embark on ambitious expansion plans.
Leo Burundi has about 60% of the Burundi market.
