Airtel Malawi to launch 3.75G

By Gregory Gondwe, Blantyre, Malawi

Airtel has announced that it will soon launch 3.75G technology in Malawi.

Saulos Chilima, Managing Director of Airtel Malawi, told a media briefing that network towers are already being upgraded to facilitate the new technology.

“With this we will give you quality mobile network that provides, among others, efficient video calling, data uploads and downloads,” explained Chilima.

He said the upgrade would revolutionise mobile internet in the country, allowing customers to experience faster mobile data speeds than ever before.

Chilima then led a group of journalists to one of the 3.75G technology towers in Area 49 in Capital Lilongwe, where he explained how they are different from the towers that are currently providing 3G technology.

The company announced two months ago that it is investing USD5.2 million to roll out an advanced third generation network in the country which will spread with 185 network towers in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Lilongwe Blantyre and Mangochi, Salima and Kasungu.

This is part of USD25 million which Bharti Airtel’s CEO (International) and Joint Managing Director Manoj Kohli announced the company would invest in Malawi to expand services and upgrade its infrastructures.
