21 Days of Y’ello Care: MTN employees engage for the youth

MTN Cameroon, leader of the electronic communications sector in Cameroon, has announced the launch of the 12th edition of the 21 Days of Y’ello Care programme. Initiated in 2007 by the MTN Group, the 21 Days of Y’ello Care programme engages each year, employees of MTN to carry out for 21 days, social actions for the wellbeing of communities in the 22 Operations of the Group, worldwide.

For this 12th edition, employees of MTN Cameroon have chosen to realize 3 projects to enable them to offer a bright future to Cameroonian youths, by providing them tools that can ease their insertion in the professional world and digital economy.

The first project is on the capacity building of students in telecommunications. Faculties and institutions of higher learning will receive a donation of telecoms equipment to enable the students, apart from theory, to familiarize with the technical realities of telecoms trades. The realization of this first project also includes the organisation of a hackathon, an applications development challenge, which will enable the students to showcase their creative ingenuity in the domain of digital innovation.   

The second project is on the organisation of a career day on 21 June, during which the various trades at MTN shall be presented. The faculty of industrial engineering of the University of Douala will host this event. The “Y’ello Career Day” will bring together students, teachers and reputable professionals of the telecoms sector, as well as employees of MTN Cameroon. The objective of the “Y’ello Career Day” will be to present students with the various employment opportunities offered by the telecoms sector.

The third project is on the sensitization of communities on the importance of digital economy. Each employee is notably invited to sponsor at least 21 people in the adoption and use of mobile money as means of payment.

“We hope our programme this year will demonstrate the best of our technical know-how and willingness to improve the daily life of communities, through promoting digital economy in Cameroon and building the capacity of youths,” declared Saim Yaksan, CEO of MTN Cameroon during the official launching of the 12th edition of 21 Days of Y’ello Care on 1 June 2018 in Douala.

Since the launch of 21 Days of Y’ello Care in 2007, MTN Cameroon employees have realized several projects that seek to guarantee the welfare of communities, notably: the construction of 02 primary schools and refurbishment of 05 others, creation and equipment of  8 school libraries, enrolment of 2,100 young girls in the Northern regions, planting of 2,000 trees, etc.  

It should be noted that, the 21 Days of Y’ello Care programme puts in competition the 21 Operations of the MTN Group, worldwide. The outstanding commitment of MTN staff has enabled MTN Cameroon to be the grand winner of the competition in 2012, 2013, and 2015.
